Ulrike Schaede ウリケ・シェーデ

Professor of Japanese Business, University of California San Diego

I am a global business scholar who studies management, strategy and corporate transformation in Japan. By identifying systemic differences in the design of organizations and business processes across countries, I aim to elucidate the tradeoffs and efficiency consequences inherent in the economic, social and business choices that countries and companies make. I focus on Japan, because Japan’s system has shown enduring differences in these designs, which have produced remarkably different outcomes over time. Today, in particular, preferring slow corporate transformation over GDP growth over the past 20 or so years has allowed Japan to achieve a high level of social stability. In the long run, this has made Japan a strong business setting, and the results of the ongoing reinvention and transformation are now beginning to show.

New Book Publications 2023~2024

Japan Re-Emerges is about the “Mainoumi Strategy” and overcoming the pessimism bias. First published in Japanese with Nikkei BP, this book has become a bestseller. I then transposed it for a non-Japanese readership and self-published it on Amazon. It’s $5.99 for the Kindle version - less than a latte or bowl of ramen. Check it out here. Also see a Japan Zoominar with Brad Glosserman for a discussion of its contents here.

This book is the Japanese edition that introduces the “Mainoumi Strategy”. The title translates into “New Japanese Management: Overcoming the Pessimism Bias”. Also see Japan Zoominar with Nobuyuki Oishi for a discussion of its contents here.

How the DX is changing what we used to know about Japanese business, society, and government (click the image for a link). Published in 2022, this book argues that the concurrent arrival of the DX and demographic change (aka shrinking/ageing society) may be a “lucky moment” for Japan, as one may well fix the problems caused by other (think: automation v. labor shortage). We look at industry 4.0, digital manufacturing, agrotech, retail, the changing employment system, and new roles for politicians and bureaucrats in industrial policy.
